Santiago Navonne, who’s studying for a degree in Electrical Engineering, is Energetics Division Lead. For most of us, this is the first project of this magnitude and level of complexity, and as our team grew from 7 people to 70, we had to reorganize the team structure. The goal was to ensure that everybody had a thorough understanding of the component they were designing, but also how that fit into the vehicle as a whole.”

Navonne recounts: “On the electrical side, our vehicle uses a fairly distributed system architecture, in which a control core receives and sends information to a number of modules spread out across the vehicle. Integrity of the communication between all devices is vital, which is why CAN was the ideal choice. We use two CAN networks, one for messages between devices fully designed by us (allowing us to use a completely customized messaging protocol), and one for off-the-shelf devices like the motor controller and battery management system.”

The devices will then be installed on the vehicle for testing in the field, providing us with a way to monitor the vehicle’s status in real time, and at the same time saving that information to permanent storage for failure analysis. The decision to participate in this competition, while supported by Caltech faculty, was driven by students entirely.” So why now and why this competition, begs the question. “The answer is really a combination of finding the right people at the right time: a group of students with a passions for cars and engineering willing to undertake an incredibly ambitious challenge, at a time when electric vehicle research and design is finally making a strong appearance in the industry,” enthuses Navonne.

Let’s face it, software already plays an integral part in most cars today, but cars of the future will rely on yet more millions of lines of code, which will differentiate them accordingly. Explains Josh Hartung, co-founder and CEO of Harbrick: “Electric and autonomous are here to stay! A few years down the line, cars will start to look functionally the same i.e. two electric motors and a battery. The difference will be in the software. Whereas there are up to 100 computers communicating with each other in a car today and each ECU focused on a particular application, these will consolidate down to three or less central computers.”

As the shift from ‘many boxes, one function, to one box, many functions’ happens, bandwidth will become the prime enabler. Confirms Hartung: “We are looking at 10 to 40Gb connections to be able to handle the extreme data loads of multiple cameras, radar and lidar used for autonomous driving.”

So what does this mean for CAN? Interestingly, CAN’s role is set to expand. Hartung confirms that most autonomous vehicles have between 8 and 10 CAN channels on board and that CAN will be as necessary in future vehicles as it is today: “CAN’s real-time behaviour, high message integrity and simplicity, among its many attributes, assures its place within the communication infrastructure of tomorrow’s vehicles, particularly for device/motion control, timing and data critical applications.” Asked about CAN FD in autonomous vehicles, Hartung responded: “CAN FD offers us the extra bandwidth to do encryption, so yes, it will undoubtedly have a role to play too.”

Asked about the use of Kvaser’s mini PCI Express 2xHS within the Norland ECU, Hartung says: “We use a lot of Kvaser hardware. Kvaser has the best Linux CAN library, it is built to the highest quality, is never unreliable and offers the highest message frequency handling, plus we get great support. It’s the reason we can say to customers with confidence that the Norland ECU ‘implements a reliable, real-time, distributed data bus that is ready for anything from the battlefield to the city streets!’.”

At the 15th international CAN Conference (iCC) in Vienna (Austria) on October 27 and 28th 2015, over 40% of CAN FD tabletop exhibitors used Kvaser CAN FD IP. In addition to Kvaser, Microchip, K2L and Janz Tec all used CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) IP that has been designed in-house by Kvaser’s hardware development team.

At the event, Kvaser announced that Microchip, with whom it has worked closely to test and validate its IP, is integrating Kvaser’s CAN and CAN FD IP in future controller products destined for automotive and industrial applications. Kvaser also announced a strategic partnership with Synective Labs to commercialize its complete set of IP blocks for CAN FD, which are now available for FPGA and ASICs for non-strategic customers.

Presentations were made by Kent Lenartsson, Kvaser’s research manager, who spoke about a CAN FD filter for Classical CAN controllers, whilst Derek Sum, a Kvaser support engineer, discussed the pros and cons of a wireless replacement for cables in CAN networks. Kvaser’s president Lars Berno Fredriksson chaired the session on higher-layer protocols.

New to Kvaser’s interface portfolio is the USBcan Pro 2xHS v2, a USB to dual channel Controller Area Network (CAN) or CAN with Flexible Data-Rate (CAN FD) interface with scripting capability. This device is perfect for tackling rapid ECU flashing, advanced bus analysis and development work.

The USBcan Pro 2xHS v2 has a standard USB connector and two high-speed CAN channels with ISO 11898-2 compliant CAN transceivers in two separate 9-pin D-SUB CAN connectors. High-performance, yet compact, it can be used as a simple dual-channel interface to connect two high speed CAN busses to a PC or mobile computer, or by using the programming feature, it is capable of much more. For example, users can run a t program on the Kvaser USBcan Pro 2xHS to speed up file transfer protocols or to emulate ECUs and other devices by generating traffic and handling protocols.

Like the USBcan Light 2xHS, the USBcan Pro 2xHS v2 features the sleek, ergonomically designed housing that Kvaser products are renowned for and comes with galvanic isolation as standard. However, unlike the USBcan Light 2xHS, the Pro version offers t script programming and is shipped with Kvaser TRX, a lightweight development environment that lowers the bar when starting out programming the device. The USBcan Pro 2xHS v2 is also supplied with CANlib, the software API that is common to all Kvaser hardware.

Swedish CAN hardware specialist Kvaser AB is pleased to announce two new additions to its well-known Kvaser Leaf CAN to USB interface family, the Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 and Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 OBDII. This evolution of the Leaf family brings programmability to user’s fingertips, as well as CAN with Flexible Data-Rate (CAN FD).

The Leaf Pro is perhaps the easiest way to connect a computer to a CAN bus network by means of the standard USB interface and 9-pin D-SUB connector. Having made its name as the work-horse of USB to CAN interfaces, Kvaser’s Leaf interface family provide reliable, low cost tools for connecting any CAN network to a PC or mobile computer in applications as wide ranging as automotive, mining, marine, military, oil and gas exploration, industrial and heavy machinery.

Kvaser’s Pro versions boast a high transmit capability that meets the needs of CAN FD frames. The Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 transmits the 64 data bytes of a CAN FD frame at bit rates up to 8 Mbit/s, in addition to standard CAN frames of 8 bytes. With a maximum message rate of 20000 messages per second, each time-stamped with a one microsecond accuracy, this is a highly advanced, portable real-time CAN to USB interface that can be customised using Kvaser’s t programming language. For example, users can run a t program to speed up file transfer protocols or to emulate ECUs and other devices by generating traffic and handling protocols.

Commenting on the announcement, Lars-Berno Fredriksson, president of Kvaser AB, said: “Our best-selling interface just got better. CAN FD-capability and programmability make the Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 and Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 OBDIIour most capable Leafs yet!”

Galvanic isolation is a standard feature of this sleek, ergonomically designed interface. With a 107cm long USB lead, and either a standard 9-pin DSUB or a 16-pin OBDII connector, the Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 and Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 OBDII suit a wide range of environments, from ECU development and test to in-the-field service situations.

Support and Availability

The Leaf Pro HS v2 and Kvaser Leaf Pro HS v2 OBDII are available now with free software, free software updates and free support.
