Leading Controller Area Network (CAN) interface specialist, Kvaser AB, is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Synective Labs AB (Gothenburg, Sweden) to commercialise Kvaser’s CAN with Flexible Data-Rate (CAN FD) and CAN 2.0 IP.

A complete set of IP blocks for CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) has been developed by Kvaser, primarily for integration into its own FPGAs. By partnering with Synective Labs, Kvaser’s IP modules will be made available for FPGA and ASICs for any non-strategic customers.

In June 2015, ISO approved ISO 11898-1:2015, the document that specifies the Classical CAN and CAN FD protocols. Whilst yet to be published in its final form, Kvaser’s CAN FD implementation complies with both the latest proposed standard for CAN FD 1.0 and the CAN 2.0 standard. Synective ensures compatibility with the final version of the CAN FD standard (ISO11898) once it becomes available.

Kvaser’s CAN FD block has been designed with the following features:

Small size

Low-latency DMA

Highly configurable

Status updates in the data stream

Easy integration

This IP implementation supports CAN FD bit-rates up to 13 Mbit/s with 40MHz clock frequency.
The IP block is delivered with a system bus interface for easy integration, though it is also possible to use simply the internal core logic without buffers and with a simple interface to achieve minimal frame size.

Leading Controller Area Network (CAN) interface specialist, Kvaser AB, is pleased to announce a strategic collaboration with Microchip Technology Inc., to support CAN with Flexible Data-Rate (CAN FD). Microchip will be integrating Kvaser’s CAN and CAN FD IP in future controller products destined for automotive and industrial applications. Kvaser benefits from Microchip’s extensive integration expertise and test capabilities. Kvaser and Microchip have an interest in working together to test and develop improvements to the Kvaser CAN FD Technology.

CAN FD is an extension to the original CAN protocol as specified in ISO 11898-1 that responds to increased bandwidth requirements in automotive networks. CAN FD allows for a higher data rate and larger packet size that makes it well suited for data intensive automotive electronic applications.

Speaking about the partnership, Lars-Berno Fredriksson, president of Kvaser AB, said: “Kvaser is proud to support Microchip’s CAN FD developments with our CAN FD IP – this is great validation of the work we have been doing in preparation for CAN FD. As one of the first companies to participate in the CAN ecosystem, Kvaser offers deep knowledge and long experience in CAN and we are fully committed to supporting new developments, such as CAN FD.”

Commented Orlando Esparza, Microchip’s CAN FD Product Line Marketing Manager: “Microchip recognizes that there will be a transition from CAN 2.0 to CAN FD in the coming years. Since 2012, Microchip has been working directly with automotive OEMs in all global regions to understand their requirements, timelines and expectations and are developing solutions to support their needs.” He added: “Microchip has a good and longstanding relationship with Kvaser, helping to minimize our device development cycle times. As a result, we have been able to quickly make design adjustments to meet ISO specification changes and requirements and plan to begin the roll out of controller products mid-2016. Microchip has already released multiple automotive approved physical layer CAN FD transceiver products. ”

Microchip used preliminary CAN FD controller samples with ‘Kvaser inside’ to demonstrate its CAN FD capabilities at the 15th international CAN Conference (iCC) in Vienna, Austria on October 27 and 28, 2015. Kvaser staff were also presenting at the event, as well as demonstrating Kvaser’s CAN FD capable interfaces and dataloggers.

Kvaser AB has introduced the Kvaser PCIEcan 4xHS, a highly integrated, high speed controller area network (CAN) network card that adds four high speed CAN channels to any standard computer board with PCI Express capability. Offering silent mode, error frame detection/generation and an on-board buffer, this small form factor add-on board fits many embedded data acquisition systems and is CAN-FD ready.

Commented Lars-Berno Fredriksson, president of Kvaser AB: “The Kvaser PCIEcan 4xHS is by far our fastest network card ever. With an in-house developed CAN-controller, implemented in an FPGA, no compromises have been made in terms of message speed.”

The Kvaser PCIEcan 4xHS has an average response time of 45 µs. An onboard buffer ensures that there is no risk of the card ‘dropping’ messages, meaning that the Kvaser PCIEcan 4xHS is as robust as it is responsive. This is very useful in ‘ping-pong protocols’ such as firmware updates.

This is a low profile card (86 x 69mm) that is fully compatible with J1939, CANopen, NMEA 2000 and DeviceNet. With a wide operating temperature of 0oC to +85oC and galvanically isolated CAN bus drivers, it is designed for standard and industrial computers alike.

Kvaser’s PCIEcan boards are supported by device drivers and program examples for Windows and Linux. All Kvaser CAN interface boards share a common software API, Kvaser CANLIB, that is free to download. Kvaser CanKing, a general purpose interactive CAN bus monitor, can also be download free of charge from our web site.

2nd February 2015 – Kvaser AB has introduced a 5 channel high-speed controller area network (CAN) to USB interface and datalogger that allows users to monitor and log data from multiple CAN channels using just one device. The Kvaser Memorator Pro 5xHS not only time synchronises the data transmitted and received across all five buses but also automatically synchronises with other Kvaser interfaces connected to the same PC, resulting in simpler, more accurate multichannel data capture.

The Kvaser Memorator Pro 5xHS has a 26 pin HD DSUB that connects to a splitter with five 9 pin DSUBs, and one USB connector that easily links to any USB port on a host computer. Only one USB port needs to be allocated when monitoring multiple CAN buses, reducing the need for an external hub in many applications.

A special feature of the 5-channel Memorator Professional is its ability to run user-developed scripts. Like Kvaser’s Eagle interface and datalogger, the Memorator Pro 5xHS’s script functionality allows users to develop highly customised applications written in the Kvaser t programming language, such as CAN protocol converters, CAN gateways and advanced CAN logging functionality. Application-specific scripts for this device will also be available from Kvaser’s network of technical associates, who all have different domain expertise. As such, this device is designed to appeal to engineers in industries as broad ranging as automotive development, machine control and industrial network connectivity.

Commented Lars-Berno Fredriksson, president of Kvaser AB: “A five channel combined interface and datalogger in Kvaser’s trademark form factor is a first for the industry. It transforms the task of multiple CAN channel data gathering, making the process easier and quicker for engineers and the process more robust.”

Martin Sventén, General Manager at Accurate Technologies AB notes: “New engines typically undergo rigorous performance and durability testing on a dynamometer rig for days at a time. Typically, multiple CAN channels monitor all parameters, but interfacing with them can mean a rat’s nest of cabling at the dyno or indeed, during in-vehicle testing. This product decreases cabling complexity and frees up USB ports on the PC. The datalogging capability means that results from up to five CAN channels are recorded on one card, thus avoiding the difficult situation of trying to combine logfiles from two or three different memory cards.”

When connected to the host computer, the Memorator Pro 5xHS is automatically in interface mode and when connected only to CAN, it is in datalogger mode. Power is derived from the USB connection, CAN and an in-built power supply.

The Kvaser Memorator Pro 5xHS is compatible with J1939, CANopen, NMEA 2000® and DeviceNet, and will also be CAN FD upgradeable via firmware. It is supported in newer versions of CANLIB and Kvaser Memorator Config Tool software.
