Leading Controller Area Network (CAN) interface specialist, Kvaser AB, is pleased to announce that its CAN with Flexible Data-Rate (CAN FD) IP was put through rigorous bit rate tests at the second CAN FD plugfest event between 6th & 7th April 2016 in Detroit, USA, and passed with flying colours!

The event gathered many of the CiA member companies that are implementing CAN FD in silicon to test the interoperability of their CAN FD implementations using different topologies and transmission speeds. After testing basic functions such as sending and receiving messages, the data-phase bit-rate was increased in steps from 2 Mbit/s to 8 Mbit/s. Kvaser’s IP implementation has been designed to support CAN FD bit-rates up to 8 Mbit/s with 80MHz clock frequency, so it met the tests with ease.

Kvaser’s Research Manager, Kent Lennartsson conducted the tests on Kvaser’s CAN FD FPGA, as used in Kvaser’s CAN FD compliant interfaces. Talking about the event, he reported: “About 20 different solutions were tested and no major problems were found. Proof of the robustness of CAN FD technology was that the shortening and lengthening of some critical bits didn’t result in faults. This bodes well for the roll-out of CAN FD in the near future.”

A complete set of Kvaser IP modules for CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) is available to non-strategic customers through Synective Labs. Synective can supply either a bus interfaceable core bundled with demo software, or a BSP (Bit Stream Processor) block, stripped of buffers and other features, making it very small. The IP is available for Xilinx, Altera, and other FPGA vendors.

CAN FD is an extension to the original CAN protocol as specified in ISO 11898-1:2015 that responds to increased bandwidth requirements in automotive networks. CAN FD allows for a flexible data rate and larger packet size that makes it ideally suited to new, data intensive automotive applications such as body electronics and in-car networking.

Kvaser made an early start in CAN FD and its CAN FD implementation was one of the few to run all test cases without any problems at the CAN FD Plug Fest in Detroit in March 2015.

Kent Lennartsson is an active member of the ISO 11898-1 and ISO 16845-1 committees, which cover both CAN and CAN FD.

The Formula Student Competition is about just that – giving students a chance to test their theoretical knowledge, alongside practical skills such as project management and team working. And perhaps never before in the history of Formula Student has there been as much opportunity for this theoretical knowledge and practical experience to transfer so freely into real-world vehicle applications, as with today’s Formula SAE Electric Collegiate Design Competition.

For most of us, this is the first project of this magnitude and level of complexity, and as our team grew from 7 people to 70, we had to reorganize the team structure. The goal was to ensure that everybody had a thorough understanding of the component they were designing, but also how that fit into the vehicle as a whole.”

Integrity of the communication between all devices is vital, which is why CAN was the ideal choice. The decision to participate in this competition, while supported by Caltech faculty, was driven by students entirely.” So why now and why this competition, begs the question. “The answer is really a combination of finding the right people at the right time: a group of students with a passions for cars and engineering willing to undertake an incredibly ambitious challenge, at a time when electric vehicle research and design is finally making a strong appearance in the industry,” enthuses Navonne.

Did you ever think it would be possible to design a car – let alone an autonomous one – just like a smartphone? Harbrick has designed a clever piece of kit that allows you to do just that. Containing an Intel Bay Trail Atom quad core processor running Harbrick’s PolySync software, Kvaser’s mini PCI Express 2xHS, plus four USB 3.0 ports and three gigabit Ethernet ports, the Norland ECU is effectively an out-of-the-box operating system for autonomous vehicles, in just the way that Android is for robots.

Harbrick’s Norland ECU and PolySync software takes away the hassle of building the back end infrastructure, allowing the developer to focus on building algorithms – the nuts and bolts of an autonomous car. Let’s face it, software already plays an integral part in most cars today, but cars of the future will rely on yet more millions of lines of code, which will differentiate them accordingly. Explains Josh Hartung, co-founder and CEO of Harbrick: “Electric and autonomous are here to stay! A few years down the line, cars will start to look functionally the same i.e. two electric motors and a battery. The difference will be in the software. Whereas there are up to 100 computers communicating with each other in a car today and each ECU focused on a particular application, these will consolidate down to three or less central computers.”

As the shift from ‘many boxes, one function, to one box, many functions’ happens, bandwidth will become the prime enabler. Confirms Hartung: “We are looking at 10 to 40Gb connections to be able to handle the extreme data loads of multiple cameras, radar and lidar used for autonomous driving.”

So what does this mean for CAN? Interestingly, CAN’s role is set to expand. Hartung confirms that most autonomous vehicles have between 8 and 10 CAN channels on board and that CAN will be as necessary in future vehicles as it is today: “CAN’s real-time behaviour, high message integrity and simplicity, among its many attributes, assures its place within the communication infrastructure of tomorrow’s vehicles, particularly for device/motion control, timing and data critical applications.” Asked about CAN FD in autonomous vehicles, Hartung responded: “CAN FD offers us the extra bandwidth to do encryption, so yes, it will undoubtedly have a role to play too.”

Kvaser has the best Linux CAN library, it is built to the highest quality, is never unreliable and offers the highest message frequency handling, plus we get great support. It’s the reason we can say to customers with confidence that the Norland ECU ‘implements a reliable, real-time, distributed data bus that is ready for anything from the battlefield to the city streets!’.”

At the 15th international CAN Conference (iCC) in Vienna (Austria) on October 27 and 28th 2015, over 40% of CAN FD tabletop exhibitors used Kvaser CAN FD IP. In addition to Kvaser, Microchip, K2L and Janz Tec all used CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) IP that has been designed in-house by Kvaser’s hardware development team.

At the event, Kvaser announced that Microchip, with whom it has worked closely to test and validate its IP, is integrating Kvaser’s CAN and CAN FD IP in future controller products destined for automotive and industrial applications. Kvaser also announced a strategic partnership with Synective Labs to commercialize its complete set of IP blocks for CAN FD, which are now available for FPGA and ASICs for non-strategic customers.

Presentations were made by Kent Lenartsson, Kvaser’s research manager, who spoke about a CAN FD filter for Classical CAN controllers, whilst Derek Sum, a Kvaser support engineer, discussed the pros and cons of a wireless replacement for cables in CAN networks. Kvaser’s president Lars Berno Fredriksson chaired the session on higher-layer protocols.
